Recipients of the NAFSA Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization Announced

The National Association for Study Abroad (NAFSA) recently announced the five winners of the Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization and the three institutions receiving the Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award. Both awards are part of the 2012 Senator Paul Simon Awards for Campus Internationalization.

These institutions were selected for utilizing diverse ways of to internationalize their campus. Many of the universities focus on the strategic integration of international, intercultural, and global segments by creating global networks and partnerships with other colleges. The award recipients were selected by a committee of NAFSA members, including Gil Latz of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Peter Coclanis of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Tom D’Agostino of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Paul McVeigh of Northern Virginia Community College, and Woody Pelton of Elon University.

The fives campuses that were selected for the Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization include the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John’s University, Juniata College, Northern Arizona University, San Francisco State University, and University of Michigan. The three institutions who received the Simon Spotlight Award include Providence College, University of Arizona, and Washington and Jefferson College. Given by NAFSA annually, the Paul Simon Awards for Campus Internationalization were named for Senator Paul Simon (D-Ill.), who appreciated achievements in campus internationalization.

Simon was a supporter of international education and foreign language learning. His work includes helping establish the National Security Education Program, which works to address language deficiency for defense purposes, and the Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Foundation Act, which promotes U.S. citizens’ world knowledge through increasing study abroad opportunities.
